End of the line
Foster grew around a railroad terminus and faded when floods took the line. Each era sent a different stream of traffic past the same spot at the foot of the dam.
The San Diego, Cuyamaca and Eastern line reaches Foster, which becomes its last station. The depot stays open until 1916.

Blasting at Foster’s rock quarries rattled windows about 7 miles away, the Poway Progress reported that June.
Ranchers, beekeepers, a locomotive engineer, a brakeman, quarrymen and a stonecutter. Joseph Foster ran the hotel and a stage line from the depot to Ramona, Warner Springs and Julian.
An October brush fire burns within 200 feet of the depot and hotel. Residents move more than a ton of quarry dynamite and bury it in the San Diego River bed.
Floods wash out the track between Lakeside and Foster. The railroad is never rebuilt, and the post office closes the same year.
Built from 1941 to 1943 at 220 feet. In 1942 the reservoir covered the road north of Foster, and the route to Ramona moved west.
After a 117-foot raise to 337 feet, the reservoir reopens to boaters and anglers on September 22, 2016, after 8 years closed.
The townsite sits at the foot of the dam, inside Lakeside 92040. Traffic still passes Foster on its way somewhere: the boat ramp, Barona and SR-67 to Ramona.
