The name comes from a cattle brand. In 1918 W. J. Stowe registered the 4S mark with San Diego County for the 4 Stowes running the ranch: William, his wife Ada and their sons Perry and Gardner. The San Diego History Seeker tells the story of the 4 Stowes.
